Today’s trax

Hangin’ downtown  –  Cameo (Though wearing outlandish costume, Larry Blackmon and his pared down band did not pare down the quality of their Soul trax)

Planets of life  –  The Whispers ( The Whispers revisited a trak they recorded whilst on the Soul Clock label turning it into a Magnum Opus of seven minutes plus … this trak was also been re-edited by ‘6th Bourough Project’ giving it new exposure)

Kilowatt  –  The Kay-Gees (Name inspired by James Brown’s backing band – ‘The JB’s … title trak of their album, released on Delite Records offshoot Gang Records)

Without you  –  Spero featuring Diane Scott (Another classic from Chicago’s Afterhours label … not a frantic as some House trax but more elegant with a more Soulful vocal)

I’m in love (and i love the feeling)  –  Rose Royce (Produced by Norman Whitfield – the vocals arrangements reminds me of a few years previous when Norman was producing The Temptations)

House of the rising sun  –  Hot R S (A hit for The Animals featuring Eric Eric Burdon also Nina Simone … Disco-Rock is the name of the game for this U.K. release on Chrysalis Records)

Can’t stop groovin’ now wanna do it some more –  B T Express (Released on Roadshow – the production company/record label … from the album ‘Energy to burn’ which was produced by Jeff Lane)

Lean on me  –  James Ingram (James first came to prominence to Soul fans as the featured vocalist on   Quincy Jones’s ‘The Dude’ album – he later signed to with Quincy’s Qwest Records … as Soul music began to take a nose-dive – Masters at Work shows us what a stellar vocalist James is)

Guilty  –  Superior Movement featuring Yvonne Gage (We all know this was written by The Bee Gees for Barbra Streisand … this version was released on Chycago International Music & distributed by Columbia (now known as Sony) … produced by Donald Burnside)

Thank you baby –  Flashlight (Produced by Stan ‘The Man’ Watson who was said to be ‘Hustler Bill’ that ‘First Choice’ sung about – as he did his utmost best to keep his Philly Groove Record label afloat – title only but not lyrics)

Pump it up  –  Network (The album from which this is taken from was as mythical as a Dragon or a Unicorn, with a few promos released on Salsoul Records and hardly anything else, stories came hard and fast … a bonafide Boogie album featuring Howard King –  producer of ‘The Strangers’)

Gimme the music  –  Finchley Road (Quark Records was the new beginning of the New York & New Jersey independent labels who were now producing Garage/House Music … written/produced by Jason Load with Althea McQueen on background vocals)
