Today’s trax

Stop, look listen – Will Downing & Gerald Albright (A monster for The Stylistics – Written by Thom Bell and Linda Creed for Philadelphia International Records publishing arm Mighty Three Music whose was ‘you’ll never forget our tunes’ … hence they became my favourite label and music publisher)

Moonlight lovin’ (Menage a’ trois)  –  Isaac Hayes (The former ‘Mr Stax’ – as he was the most important and successsful artist on the label released  his first Polydor album came this mid tempo monster came… mixed by Mr Magic himself Tom Moulton at Sigma Sounds Philadelphia)

More Rhymes  –  Young MC (This trak is a sort of tribute to the late Ben E King … originally called ‘Supernatural Thing’ and was sung by Ben  – written by the warm and sincere but now deceased Gwen Guthrie & Pat Grant, incidentally i recently picked up the Japanese cd of said Mr. King lpof the same name)

Ride the storm  – Akabu featuring Linda Clifford (Linda is letting her man know that they need some ‘us’ time … a  little confusing as this is on the ‘Jakatta’ cd but credited to ‘Akabu on single format – both are the  brainchild of U.K.Disco/House producer & label owner Dave Lee aka Joey Negro)

This man of mine  – The Affair ( The Affair were a U.K. duo consisting of Hazel Fernandez and Steve Carmichael who was also the principle writer/producer/arranger … released on ‘Fourth & Broadway’ – a unit of Island Records)

Dance, dance, dance  –  Liquid Smoke (Produced by Jay Ellis, Meco Monardo & Tony Bongiovi who collectively known as DCA (Disco Corporation of America) … these guys were famous for introducing Gloria Gaynor to the listening public also producing her early works)

Bring me up  –  Romanthony (Released on his wonderfully named ‘Black Male Records’ … on some releases this trak sounded like one of Prince’s funk workouts – there were so many mixes that the original was nearly forgotten)

Deeper  –  Tony Martin (Recorded in New Jersey, mixed by Blaze – released on Easy Street – that’s three badges of honor not forgetting the excellent vocals … it the simplicity that makes it work so well)

Today’s trax

A love of your own  –  Millie Scott (As part of a duo ‘Cut Glass’ whose releases  were on Twenieth Century Fox – she was credited as Mildred Vaney … originally written and recorded by Scottish Funk/Soul outfit the Average White Band)

Love dancin’  –  Marlena Shaw (Marlena was the first woman to be assigned ‘Blue Note Records’  …. culled from Side 1 of the original medley on the vinyl lp – then remixed by John Luongo who was Columbia (now Sony) regular remixer)

Summertime lovin’  –  Steve Arrington (Former Slave vocalist only solo single for Salsoul Records … produced by Steve Washington who was also a member of Slave whose off-shots includes Aurra & Civil Attack)

Stay close  –  Mondee’ Oliver  (Released on Gherkin Records of Chicago and was licence to Island Records in U.K. … released in 89 – shows House Music was was already spreading it’s wings as this trak has Jazz tinge to it)
